Today, I’m reminded of why it is we do what we do, and why we are so lucky to love it. Weddings are awesome, and we love a love story… I can hardly believe it, but Matt and I just celebrated our FIFTH wedding anniversary. We’ve known each other for 15 years. We’ve dated since we were sophomores in college, but it feels like just yesterday that I was dancing on the 66th floor of the Metropolitan Club of the Sears Tower with all my favorite people in the world.
I know everyone says “it feels like yesterday”, and lucky for us it really is true. Maybe it’s because we are reminded of our own wedding everyday on the job. Our clients ask us for advice on wedding planning, or we’ll be taking some pictures downtown, and all of a sudden we’re whisked back to the gorgeous day in May 2007. I see the excitement in our couples’ eyes, and the tears on their parents’ faces – and I am brought back to the exact moment that my husband and I were first announced as “Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Raney”. It felt AWESOME.
We’ve learned a lot about each other and ourselves over the years. I, for example, would never have ever pictured myself a baseball fan – sports were never my thing. And Matt’s 20 year old self would cringe at the idea that he would allow (and enjoy) R. Kelly’s “Ignition Remix” played at his own reception. So every year on our anniversary we spend the weekend at a baseball park. We watch an entire Twins vs. Anyone series, drink beer and eat hot dogs until we can’t, and relax (pass out?) at our nearby hotel. But my favorite thing to do? Revisit our own wedding pictures. This is why we do what we do. This is why we love it.
